About This Site
Introduction
This is my first attempt at creating a web site myself from scratch, driven by dis-satisfaction with my two previous sites created using templates provided by a free hosting site and by a genealogical software programme. Whilst knowing I wanted something better I knew nothing about HTML, XHTML, CSS or other web based techie stuff. So I did what I always do, did a bit of web research and flicked through a couple of books to grab some hints, tips and basic knowledge and just had a bash. After far too many hours of trial, error, tears, frustration and typing I finally came up with this site. Personally, I think it's a pretty good effort for a first time web-designer.

Design Credits
I am not an expert in web design, far from it, in fact! The design of this site has been influenced by examples of open source website templates (templates created for anyone to use or adapt as they wish) and a couple of books I've used.
The web-designers whose knowledge I have pilfered and adapted and the templates used for inspiration are:
- Viktor Persson and his "Indigo" template.
- Andreas Viklund and his "andreas03" and "andreas08" templates
The books I have used to figure out what I should be doing and how to fix the many things that went wrong are:
- "HTML and CSS In 24 Hours" by Dick Oliver and Michael Morrison
- "Beginning CSS Web Development: From Novice To Professional" by Simon Collison.

Web Design Standards
Despite this being my first true foray onto the web and because I have a tendency to perfectionism and a competitive streak I have tried to ensure that the site adheres to guidelines and standards developed by World Wide Web Consortium, known as W3C. To that end, every page on this site has been validated with WC3 and they are all Valid XHTML 1.1 (this is the language used to create the structure of pages on the web). Also the Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) which dictates how the pages look has been checked and is Valid CSS.

Details of living individuals on this site are restricted to their surname and first initial only. As this site is manually created, there is no database on the host web server that holds any additional details about you that could be accessed without permission. If your name (in any format) appears on this site and you would prefer that it doesn't, then contact me and I will replace it with Living Person or similar, as appropriate.
If you contact me then I will know your email address, below are the commitments I make to you about this email address:
- I will not share your email address with any other party without your express prior consent.
- I will never sell your details on to another party.
I may contact you from time to time, either to clarify information you have provided, request additional information or provide information that may be of interest to you (based on our previous contact).
I may in the future create a newsletter to provide quick updates on what has happened on the site. This would never be more than once a month - I do have a life to live after all!
